Using the wrong sweeteners on the HCG diet can stall your progress. HCG diet only permits two types of sweeteners, they are:

Pure Stevia

Stevia is a plant-based product that remains the number one option of dieters during the HCG diet. It is a popular sugar substitute made from the stevia plant. It has no calories, sugar, and other artificial ingredients. The sweetness of stevia does not affect your blood sugar and, it also has no effects on your body. You can use it for a balanced diet and curbing your cravings.

Nonetheless, avoid mixed products in the market. Most of them contain dextrose and erythritol that can slow down your progress. You can use the mixed stevia during the maintenance phase but not during the VLCD.


Saccharin is a low-calorie artificial sweetener that is safe for the HCG diet. Most products use saccharin as a sweetener for candies, cookies, and medicines. People who want to lose weight may benefit from using saccharin. Nonetheless, avoid having them in large quantities as they have side effects on the body. For dieters doing the HCG diet, control your sweet tooth cravings to avoid having a hard time choosing sweeteners.

Avoid the following sweeteners during the HCG diet:

  1. Erythritol. It is a sugar alcohol that is appealing to your taste buds and can trigger your appetite. It contains glucose, starch, and sugar. Erythritol can deposit additional calories and affects your weight loss.
  2. Vegetable glycerine. It is a syrup that has a sweet taste from vegetable fat. Avoid this sweetener when you are on the HCG diet because it can cause water retention.
  3. Xylitol. It is known as sugar alcohol without the actual alcohol in the ingredients. Avoid buying products that contain xylitol because it can slow down your progress.
  4. High fructose corn syrup. It is a processed sweetener from corn that can affect your HCG diet. Corn syrup can interfere with your progress because it has a similar effect to table sugar. It increases the fat deposition in your belly.
  5. Coconut sugar. It is from the heated sap of flower coconut palm. The heating process can retain some nutrients but, it also contains 11 grams of carbs per tablespoon. It is not an advisable option during the HCG diet.
  6. Fruit juice. Avoid bottled fruit sweeteners because they have a high glycemic index. It can spike your blood sugar and insulin. Fruit juice can also stimulate your appetite during the HCG diet.
  7. Honey.  It is a nutrient-dense sweetener but, it has loads of fructose and carbs. Avoid using honey during the HCG diet to prevent weight gain. You can use honey after the VLCD or during the loading days of the HCG diet.
  8. Maple syrup. It contains carbs but, it is widely permissible when you follow a ketogenic regimen. Avoid maple syrup during the second phase of the HCG diet to avoid some issues.
  9. Agave syrup. It is a processed sweetener that is attracting consumers to the market. Most people are using agave syrup as an alternative to sugar but, they have similar effects on the body. It damages your cell and causes weight gain.
